The Most In-Demand Leadership Skills in Tech Right Now
What should a strong technology leader know today? While AI fluency is now essential, there is much more to it. In our talks with Nordic executives and boards, we see a rising need for leaders who can link architecture, cloud, data, cybersecurity, and technology economics with product, people, and business strategy. The real shift is not from technical leadership to general management, but toward leaders who blend real technical credibility with sound enterprise judgement. Here are the skills that set the best technology leaders apart.

The profile of a successful technology leader is changing quickly. AI is moving from experimentation into products, workflows and operating models. Cloud economics are receiving greater scrutiny. Cybersecurity and operational resilience have become board-level concerns. At the same time, many organisations are trying to simplify technology estates built through years of growth, transformation and acquisition.
The World Economic Forum lists AI and big data, networks and cybersecurity, and tech literacy as the three fastest-growing skill areas for 2030. We see the same trend in our talks with Nordic executives and boards.
But there is an important detail. Companies do not just want more technical CTOs, CIOs, CDOs, or VPs of Engineering. They also do not want generalists who only talk about technology. More and more, organisations need leaders who can bridge both worlds.
AI fluency is rapidly becoming leadership fluency
Almost every senior technology dialogue today touches AI. But expectations are becoming more sophisticated.
A technology leader does not have to train foundation models. However, they should be able to question decisions about LLMs, AI agents, RAG versus fine-tuning, model evaluation, data architecture, inference costs, security, privacy, and responsible AI.
More importantly, they need to know where AI truly changes the economics of a product, process, or business model—and where it does not.
A CTO recently said his organisation had plenty of AI use cases. The real challenge was deciding which ones were worth changing workflows, data structures, and responsibilities for. This is becoming a key leadership issue.
It is getting easier to learn what AI can do. But knowing where to use it, how to manage it, and what changes are needed to get real value is much harder.
Architecture still matters, perhaps more than ever
As technology leaders become more commercially oriented, they risk undervaluing technical depth. We would argue the opposite. At senior levels, leaders may no longer design every system themselves, but they are accountable for decisions with multi-year consequences. They need enough depth to challenge choices around cloud architecture, APIs, distributed systems, scalability, data platforms, integration, Kubernetes, developer platforms and build-versus-buy decisions.
The same applies to cybersecurity. Zero-trust architecture, identity and access management, cloud and application security, supply-chain vulnerabilities and operational resilience cannot simply be delegated to the CISO or security team. Senior technology leaders increasingly own technology risk as an enterprise issue.
You do not need to be the best engineer in the room anymore. What matters is having enough technical credibility to ask questions that reveal weak assumptions.
Technology economics is becoming a core leadership discipline
One of the most significant changes we see is the growing importance of financial literacy in technology leadership.
Cloud has made infrastructure more flexible, but not always cheaper. AI adds another layer of costs, including model selection, inference costs, computing needs, data infrastructure, and more complex build-versus-buy choices. As a result, FinOps, ROI, TCO, and technology investment priorities are now leadership topics, not just finance team tasks.
Boards rarely need a detailed explanation of why one architecture is more technically elegant than another. But they do need to know why an architectural choice could cut infrastructure costs by 25%, boost resilience, speed up a product launch by two months, or remove a barrier to future growth. The best technology leaders can explain this clearly.
They move smoothly from business problem to product strategy, then to technology strategy, architecture, organisation, execution, and finally to measurable results. This process is becoming one of the clearest signs of strong senior technology leadership.
The valuable profile is becoming T-shaped
When assessing senior technology executives, we increasingly find the concept of a T-shaped leader useful. A leader should have real depth in at least one area, such as software engineering, architecture, data, cloud and platform engineering, cybersecurity, AI, or another technical field. On top of that, they need a broad understanding of technology across AI, data, cloud, security, product, and software architecture.
Above both is the leadership layer, which includes strategy, communication, organisational design, talent, coaching, and financial decision-making.
This mix is especially important in Nordic organisations. Our low-hierarchy, collaborative cultures can drive technology innovation. But collaboration should not mean avoiding tough decisions. Leaders must involve specialists without relying only on consensus, challenge architecture without taking over, and create autonomy while staying accountable. We sometimes describe the combination as low ego, high technical curiosity and high decisiveness.
Looking ahead
We expect the boundary between technology leadership and enterprise leadership to continue fading. The strongest future CTOs and CIOs will not abandon technical depth as they become more senior. They will use it differently. Their value will come more and more from knowing which technical questions matter, linking architecture to economics, connecting AI to organisational change, tying cybersecurity to enterprise risk, and turning all of this into decisions that leaders and boards can act on.
The World Economic Forum estimates that about 39% of workers’ current skills will change or become outdated between 2025 and 2030. This means adaptability is now a key part of what makes a good leader.
For technology leaders, staying still technically is not an option. But being only technical isn't enough either.
