Dear candidate
Thank you for your interest in Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (STH). This is a significant time for STH, with the retirement of both of our highly regarded and well respected Chief Medical Officers, and a rare opportunity to create a new executive medical leadership team to help take us forward on our journey for patient centred care and the best clinical outcomes, delivered through excellent research, education, and innovation, with a resolute focus on quality, safety and effectiveness.
We are one of UK’s largest, busiest and most complex NHS foundation trusts, providing a wide range of hospital and community services for the people of Sheffield, as well as specialist care for patients from much further afield. Our 19,000 plus staff work, both in the community, and in five of the country’s leading teaching hospitals. As a member of the Shelford Group, a collaboration between ten of the largest teaching and research-intensive NHS hospital trusts in England, we have a long history of providing high quality care and clinical excellence, as well as an international reputation for innovation in medical research and education.
Our tradition of clinical, academic and scientific achievements has been strengthened by developing one of the UK’s first Academic Health Science Networks. We have an especially close partnership with The University of Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam University, and other partners in industry to ensure we remain at the forefront of advancements in clinical services, education, and research. Equally important to us are the partnerships we have forged with local people, patients, partner NHS organisations, the local authority, and charitable bodies. Our people are critical to us and if we are to be an outstanding organisation, we need to become a beacon of excellence; ensuring we recruit and retain the best possible people to lead our highly committed workforce and maximise our ability to care for the people who rely on our services.
We are now appointing two new Chief Medical Officers (CMOs), one for Operations, and one for Development, to join our stable and high performing executive team. The CMO (Operations) will take the executive lead on all aspects of quality and safety, medical workforce development and leadership, and work closely with our Clinical Directors to ensure assurance and support for all aspects of clinical services. Meanwhile, the CMO (Development) will lead our advancement as a digitally enabled healthcare provider, including artificial intelligence and innovation, as well as medical education, research, service development, change, and transformation. Both CMOs will be members of the Shelford Group Medical Director’s group and work interchangeably with a wide range of external organisations and agencies to support partnership working and collaboration, clinical pathway redesign and represent STH on the wider stage. As one of the most senior clinical leaders in the NHS, your expertise and leadership will be crucial in providing leadership across STH and the wider system, as well as shaping and influencing strategic direction at the national level.
We are open to talented and ambitious medical leaders who bring intellect, commitment and energy. People who have experience of working at a senior level in complex healthcare settings, with considerable focus on partnership working, collaboration and delivery, quality of care and service delivery, and a drive for innovation and improvement, alongside which, a natural empathy with our organisational values is essential:
Patients first
Ensure that the people we service are at the heart of all that we do
Respectful
Be kind, respectful, fair and value diversity
Ownership
Celebrate our successes, learn continuously and ensure we improve
Unity
Work in partnership with others
Deliver
Be efficient, effective and accountable for our actions
Sheffield Teaching Hospitals is a highly inclusive organisation and invites applicants from all backgrounds, and would encourage you to review this site and speak in confidence with our partners at Alumni Global, to explore the prospect of joining us as one of our two new Chief Medical Officers.
