Chair, Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust
Formally established in 2021, the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust (NCA) is one of the largest and most respected NHS providers in England, employing approximately 20,000 staff and serving a diverse population of around one million people across the North part of Greater Manchester. We work closely in each of our localities across Salford, Bury, Rochdale and Oldham to ensure that we are delivering care to our communities in an integrated way.
The NCA is strongly placed to support the development of integrated care across the wider conurbation, through a partnership model with other health and social care providers. At its heart is a real focus on place and we work with our system partners to develop outstanding standards of care for our local population. We want to build on this strong foundation ensuring the clinical voice is heard in our decision making, with the patient at the heart of everything we do. Due to the retirement of our current Chair we are seeking to appoint a new Chair to take us on to the next stage of development.
The Opportunity and You
This represents a rare leadership opportunity, a role of significant scope and profile and one that has the chance to impact the lives of the hundreds of thousands of people we serve.
We are seeking to appoint an individual with excellent leadership qualities, evidenced by a positive track record of inspiring organisations to excel in service delivery, be that in the health sector or a different environment. The new Chair must be able to engage and work collaboratively with a wide range of internal and external senior stakeholders, play an active role in the success of the Greater Manchester system and at all times living and promoting the values of the Northern Care Alliance NHS FT.
We want our Board to be as inclusive and diverse as possible, so will look for individuals who bring lived experience that equips them both for the leadership aspects of the role and that brings an understanding of some of the challenges of our local communities.
If you can demonstrate the integrity, values and skills required, we look forward to hearing from you. For further information about this exceptional opportunity, including details on how to apply, please contact Thomas Patterson and Rabiya Ali on 07545 741 153 or rabiya.ali@alumniglobal.com.

Dear Candidate
Thank you for your interest in the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust (NCA) and this opportunity to join us as our new Chair.
Formally established on 1 October 2021, NCA brings together colleagues and services from Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust and The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. As one of the largest providers in the NHS, our dedicated team of around 20,000 colleagues delivers healthcare excellence to over one million people across Bury, Oldham, Rochdale and Salford, as well as providing more specialist services to patients from Greater Manchester and beyond.
Our patients and service users receive a range of integrated health and social care services at their home or in their community or are treated and cared for in one of our four hospitals – Salford Royal Hospital, The Royal Oldham Hospital, Rochdale Infirmary or Fairfield General Hospital in Bury. Our aim is to deliver high standards of care to them all.
Our current Chair, Professor Eileen Fairhurst is stepping down at the end of October, having left us with a strong governance foundation for the new Chair to build on alongside our Non-Executive Directors, Executive team and Chief Executive, Dr Owen Williams OBE.
The environment in the NHS is incredibly tough for our people and population alike. I continue to be inspired and impressed by the commitment, dedication and professionalism shown by our colleagues despite the pressure and demand of delivering care and supporting their colleagues in the face of significant financial and operational challenges.
There is much to be proud of at the NCA, but still more to achieve, and our new Chair will be critical to us realising our long term aims as set out in our Vision 10, as well as more immediate challenges as we continue to focus on restoration and recovery and further integration with our health and social care partners across Greater Manchester, the financial challenges as well as some significant transformation programmes as part of our financial sustainability plan. In line with our Vision 10 we want to be a place people all over the country will want to work. We want to challenge inequalities and improve health in all our Places.
Our Chair position is a rare leadership opportunity and a role of significant scope and profile, one that has the chance to impact the lives of the hundreds of thousands of people we serve.
We are looking for an individual with outstanding leadership qualities, compassion, and a passion for the work of the health and social care sector. You will be able to demonstrate a positive track record of inspiring organisations to excel in service delivery, be that in the health sector or a different environment. Our values of Care, Appreciate, Inspire will resonate with your own personal values and be behaviours that you can role model.
As an experienced Chair, or Non-Executive Director, you will understand the challenges of leading a large, complex and regulated person focused organisation. Skilled at working with executive teams, you will also bring strong political acumen and enjoy working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to ensure that NCA effectively supports the development of emerging system integration across the wider conurbation, through a partnership model with other health and social care providers.
If you have this experience and a passion for improving the lives of patients, families and carers, across all our communities as well as the experience of our colleagues, then please do consider applying for this role.
We want our Board to be as inclusive and diverse as possible, so are keen to hear from individuals who bring lived experience that equips them both for the leadership aspects of the role and an understanding of some of the challenges experienced within our local communities.
If you are interested in this significant opportunity, then I do encourage you to read further on this site and contact our retained consultants Thomas Patterson and Rabiya Ali at Alumni Global in the first instance for a confidential discussion on 07545 741 153 or rabiya.ali@alumniglobal.com.
