Chair, South Yorkshire ICB

Chair,

South Yorkshire ICB

United Kingdom

NHS South Yorkshire Integrated Care Board is a statutory NHS organisation, formed in response to the Health and Care Act 2022, responsible for securing healthcare provision for the 1.4m population of South Yorkshire. Our core responsibility is to develop a plan to meet the health needs of the population, manage the NHS budget and arrange for the provision of health services in the Integrated Care System area.

Across Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield we work alongside our local councils, our voluntary, community and social enterprises sector and other partners to address health inequalities and wider determinants of health.

  • Welcome, and thank you for your interest in the role of Chair of NHS South Yorkshire Integrated Care Board.

This is a rare and important opportunity to help shape the future of health and care for over 1.6 million people across South Yorkshire. At a time of profound change, we are looking for a Chair who will provide inclusive, collaborative and values-driven leadership, someone who will help bring partners together to improve lives, tackle inequalities, and deliver lasting impact for our communities.

NHS South Yorkshire is at the heart of an evolving integrated care system, working alongside local authorities, the Mayoral Combined Authority, community organisations and partners across public services. Together, we are focused on delivering four core ambitions:

    • Improving health outcomes and reducing inequalities

    • Ensuring consistently high-quality care

    • Driving productivity and sustainable use of resources

    • Strengthening the social and economic wellbeing of our communities

We are also driving a fundamental shift in how care is delivered—towards prevention, towards care closer to home, and towards better use of data and technology. These changes are essential to meeting the needs of our population now and for the future.

South Yorkshire is uniquely positioned to lead this transformation, including pioneering alignment between health and regional leadership through our partnership with the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority. This creates an exciting platform for system-wide innovation, particularly in prevention and population health.

As Chair, you will play a pivotal role in guiding this transformation. Reporting to both NHS England and South Yorkshire’s Mayor, you will lead the Board in setting a clear vision and strategy, ensuring strong governance, and holding the organisation to account for delivering meaningful outcomes for our communities. You will champion collaboration across organisational boundaries, bringing together health, care, local government and wider partners to deliver shared ambitions and reduce fragmentation across the system.

This role goes beyond organisational leadership. It is a system leadership role, one that requires the ability to convene, influence and align diverse partners around our common purpose and priorities for prevention and population health. You will help shape how resources are used, how services are designed, and how we improve both outcomes and experience for the people we serve.

In South Yorkshire, the Chair will also play a key role in strengthening alignment with regional priorities, including working closely with the Mayor and partners to advance prevention and integration at scale.

We are seeking an individual who brings:

    • A strong commitment to public service, integrity and the values of the NHS

    • The ability to lead inclusively and foster a culture where diverse perspectives are welcomed and valued

    • Experience of working across complex systems, building trusted relationships and influencing at the highest levels

    • Strategic insight and the ability to guide organisations through change and transformation

    • A deep commitment to improving outcomes and reducing inequalities for all communities

Above all, we are looking for a Chair who will help create a culture of openness, collaboration and shared accountability, ensuring that patients, staff and communities feel heard, respected and supported.

We believe that better decisions are made when leadership reflects the diversity of the communities we serve. We actively welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds, experiences and sectors. Whether your experience comes from health and care, local government, the voluntary sector, or beyond, what matters most is your ability to bring insight, compassion, and a commitment to improving lives. Lived experience, community connection, and a passion for equity are as important as professional expertise.

This is a pivotal moment for NHS South Yorkshire and the communities we serve. The challenges we face are significant, but so too is the opportunity to transform how care is delivered and experienced. As Chair, you will help shape that future: strengthening partnerships, improving outcomes, and ensuring that our system delivers high-quality, equitable and sustainable care for generations to come.

We look forward to learning more about what you could bring to this role and to the communities we serve and encourage you to explore this role with our partners at Alumni Global.
